What is Operation Watermelon? Did it affect TikToker Elyse Myers?

Elyse Myers, a TikTok creator with over 7 million followers, has deleted all her videos from TikTok. She hasn’t explained why, but some social media users believe ‘Operation Watermelon’ is to blame. Operation Watermelon was started by TikTok user Angie Marie in December 2023 to pressure big creators to talk about the situation in Gaza by spamming their comments with: watermelon emojis, Palestinian journalist names, and other Palestinian-related comments. Angie assigns a creator, and TikTok users comment until the creator responds and/or the video trends. For example, Hank Green, a YouTuber with over 8 million followers, used his platform to discuss the situation in Gaza and urged followers to donate because of Operation Watermelon. One creator mocked the movement, and others have ignored the comments and continued to make the content they want to. Before Elyse Myers removed her TikTok videos, almost every video she posted since October had comments about Gaza underneath. Social media users on X (formerly Twitter), have debated Myers' disappearance, focusing on whether ‘Operation Watermelon’ is a form of bullying and harassment or if influencers should discuss politics at all. What do you think? Is it a creator’s responsibility to discuss world issues?
